Sariska City Guide

Situated against the backdrop of the Aravali Hills, in Rajasthan, Sariska National Park is a quiet and peaceful place. The jungle was registered under Project Tiger in 1979 and was declared a national park in 1982. Sariska is famous for its tiger reserve though it also has a strong historical background. The monuments here symbolize its glorious past. The park also offers visitors a unique chance to study the behavioural patterns of animals residing here.

Geography of Sariska City

This sanctuary is situated in the district of Alwar in Rajasthan and lies about 110 km from Jaipur.In Summer temperature ranges from 38.3 C to 28.8 C.In winter temperature ranges from 28.3 C to 8 C.Rainy Season is from July to Mid September and very humid i.e.Upto 90%.Best time to visit is from Sept. to March.

History of Sariska City

Sariska the city has a rich natural heritage with some beautiful lakes and picturesque valleys thickly wooded in parts.Perched on the most prominent of these hills is a massive ancient fort that whispers tales of the rich history of the city.The history of Sariska is as old as 5th century BC when it was mentioned in the Hindu sacred texts that the Pandavas took shelter in Sariksa during the years of seclusion.Under the Mughul rule in the middle ages, the Knakwari Fort was used by Aurangazeb to imprison his brother.During the 8th to 12th century the rich residents of Sariska constructed a number of temples in the region which still stand as symbols of the glorious past of Sariska.Maharaja Jai Singh started the campaign of converting the region to a protected area in the 20th century which led to Sariska being declare a wildlife sanctuary by the Government in 1958.In 1979, It became a part of the prestigious Tiger project.

Demographics of Sariska City

According to 1991 census, there were 10344 human beings in 24 villages in the core zone and 243667 human beings in 246 villages in the buffer zone respectively.Human population inside and around the Reserve is increasing rapidly because of illiteracy.

Places of Interest in Sariska City

The places of interest in Sariska are:
The Kankwari Fort : Located close to the park, the Kankwari Fort is the place where Mughal emperor Aurangzeb once imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh. The incident happened in the 17th century, when they were fighting for succession of the Mughal throne.

The Ancient Shiva Neelkanth Temples : The temples date back between the 6th and13th century A.D. and are situated within the park area. These temples attract a large number of visitors. The Sariska Palace

The Sariska Palace : The picturesque palace was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the honour of the Duke of Edinburgh, who visited the sanctuary. The palace complex built in the year 1902 is now converted into a hotel.

Siliserh Lake Palace Hotel :
The magnificent royal palace was built by Maharaja Vinay Singh in 1845 for his queen Shila. Nestled amidst the beautiful landscape of wooded hills, the palace is now converted as the Lake Palace Hotel and offers boating and sailing facilities.

Excursions

Jai Samand Lake : Located at a distance of 6 kms from the city, Jaisamand Lake is a popular spot for outings and picnics. The artificial lake was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1910. Jai Samand Lake is also ideal for water sports.

Vijay Mandir Palace : 10 km away from Sariska, the Vijay Mandir Palace was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1918. The Palace overlooking a beautiful lake offers a fascinating sight. The Sita Ram Temple inside the palace attracts a large number of devotees, especially during Ramnavmi.
