Pushkar City Guide

Pushkar is a city that lies within the Ajmer district. From times immemorial Pushkar has been an important city for the pilgrims. It is considered one of the holiest cities in India. A pilgrimage would be incomplete for a Hindu if he or she does not visit Pushkar. The city lies on the banks of the Pushkar Lake. Till date it is one of the oldest settlements in India.

The city is located in Eastern Rajasthan. While the nearest city is Ajmer it is also accessible from Jodhpur, Jaipur, Udaipur, Bharatpur, Kota and other cities of Rajasthan.


History of Pushkar Travel

Fortunately Pushkar is one of these cities that did not have to undergo the mayhem and invasions. The origin of the city can be traced to legends. It is said that the very city came into existence because of Lord Brahma. It is one of the primary reasons why Pushkar is the only place in India where a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma is situated.

The primary local attraction here is the Brahma Temple. It is the only temple of its kind in the entire subcontinent. Besides this there are other temples too. These include Varaha temple, Aptaeshwar Temple, Savitri temple, Mahadev temple and Ramavaikuntha or Rangi temple. There are 52 Ghats at Pushkar where the travelers can take a dip. The Pushkar Lake is considered sacred by the devotees. It is said that taking a dip in it can enable a person to achieve salvation.

11km northwest of Ajmer is located the small town of Pushkar, one of the holiest sites in India. Every year on the day of auspicious Kartik Purnima, the full-moon phase of October/November, Pushkar brings in thousands of pilgrims from all over the country to take a holy dip in the waters of the lake, which are believed to cleanse the soul of all sins.
